76516-01 - Seminar: The University on the Barricades: Student Protest, Subcultures and Solidarity in Southern Africa and Switzerland (3 CP)

Semester fall semester 2025
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Luregn Lenggenhager (luregn.lenggenhager@unibas.ch)
Content In the past year-and-a-half, universities in Switzerland — as elsewhere — have once again become sites of public controversy. Students and sometimes faculty have joined in various protests, sparked not only by the ongoing wars in the Middle East, but also wider issues of sexual harassment, racism, and the abuse of power within academic institutions. These protests have brought to the fore questions about the role of the university, academic freedom, and freedom of speech. We have also seen growing pressure on particular scholarly fields, among them postcolonial studies, which have been exposed to unprecedented public denunciation. In this course, we situate these controversies, recently taken to extremes in the USA, in longer histories of student protest, subcultures and solidarity. We do so comparatively, drawing from past and present academic protests in Southern Africa and Switzerland, and exploring some of their entanglements
