65941-01 - Lecture: Matching and Market Design (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2026
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Cédric Wasser (c.wasser@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This course provides an introduction to matching theory and its application to market design. Some matching markets operate under fixed prices or without any monetary transfers at all. Examples include matching workers to firms in entry-level labor markets, matching children to public schools, and matching organ donors to patients. Insights from matching theory have been successfully used to design the rules of such markets and improve their outcomes. Other matching markets involve flexible monetary transfers and operate using some kind of auction, such as keyword auctions in online advertising or spectrum auctions for assigning the rights to use the electromagnetic spectrum (e.g., for providing telecommunication services). To study such auctions, the course also covers concepts from auction theory and mechanism design.
Learning objectives The students know important concepts and results of matching theory and auction theory as well as their application to market design.
