| Content | - Session topics will target specific skills needed for writing empirical research articles in political science, including but not limited to writing abstracts and literature reviews, but will also address fundamental underlying writing skills related to writing processes, outlining, paragraph construction, and prose. While the exact plan of the course is still to be determined, a typical course session will include a mix of lecture as well as small-group and individual activities and peer critique. Sessions will also include one or two small follow-up tasks for students, typically not exceeding 30 minutes’ expected completion time, to be submitted via the course platform and on which Dr Leanne Powner will provide feedback. Most sessions will have a brief reading assignment distributed in advance via the course platform. - Input for Academic Writing will be taught by Dr Leanne Powner (online), class will meet in person with Stefanie Bailer to work together in the sessions. |
| Learning objectives | · Recognize and exploit patterns in academic prose · Deploy course skills in to compose and refine scholarly prose · Describe the functions of metatext and paratext in academic prose and use them effectively · Employ tools across all stages of the writing process, from brainstorming and outlining to revision and proofreading, to facilitate effective written communication |
