77773-01 - Field trip: Friedensförderung: Konzepte, Debatten und Anwendung (5 CP)

Semester spring semester 2026
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Mario Roman Behrens (marioroman.behrens@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This seminar and study trip introduce students to both academic debates on peacebuilding and peacebuilding as a professional field. In the seminar, we analyze how peacebuilding has evolved, its changing meanings, and the practices associated with it, along with critiques that see peacebuilding mainly as a Western paradigm for stabilizing or rebuilding societies after conflict.

The first part of this course consists of seminar sessions with active student participation, preparing for the second part—a study trip to Geneva to visit selected actors involved in current peacebuilding debates and practices. We will begin by examining the emergence, functioning, and power dynamics of the peacebuilding sector, laying a foundation for analyzing the inherent tensions between peacebuilding theory and practice. We will explore these contemporary issues through a wide range of theoretical and conceptual frameworks from interdisciplinary peacebuilding literature in political science, IR, anthropology, and history.

During the two-day study trip to Geneva, participants will have the opportunity to hear from representatives of peacebuilding organizations and discuss their perspectives on the sector's current challenges.
