48610-01 - Lecture with practical courses: GIS in Health and Exposure Sciences (2 CP)

Semester spring semester 2026
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Marloes Eeftens (marloes.eeftens@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content GIS in Health and Exposure Science is a hands-on course that introduces students to the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for environmental epidemiology and exposure assessment. Using QGIS software, students learn to work with spatial data, coordinate systems, and projections; integrate and manage vector and raster datasets; and visualize geographic information through effective thematic mapping and cartographic design. The course emphasizes practical spatial analysis skills, including geoprocessing, spatial interpolation, exposure modelling, and risk mapping. Through in-class exercises in week 1 and a mini-project in week 2, students develop an understanding of spatial relationships and apply GIS methods to analyse and communicate health and environmental exposure data from their own environment.
Learning objectives To gain knowledge in the fundamentals of GIS for spatial data handling and analysis. By the end of the course, students will:
- Understand how GIS can be used to enhance health and exposure science research;
- Know how to project, manipulate and visualise spatial data in the software QGIS;
- Understand and perform basic spatial analyses;
- Be able to plan, implement and effectively communicate a mini-project, demonstrating spatial understanding and basic cartography skills.

Course takes place on site only (no online participation possible). Attendance is mandatory on all days.
