78030-01 - Seminar: A Terraqueous Empire: The Ottoman Empire on Land and at Sea (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2026
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Maurus Reinkowski (maurus.reinkowski@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Together with the Habsburg and Tsarist Russian empires, the Ottoman Empire is considered a classic example of a land empire. Nevertheless, it is widely recognized that the Ottoman Empire had also been a maritime power since the 16th century. For centuries, the Black Sea was an Ottoman “mare nostrum.” In this seminar, we will look at the deep interconnection between the sea, the coast, and the hinterland in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea regions..
Learning objectives Seminar participants will:
-- work together to develop an understanding of the Ottoman Empire as an empire on land and sea;
-- understand the close interaction between the sea, coastal areas, and hinterland in the context of the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
.
