78091-01 - Practical course: Conference Management: African Perspectives on Global Transformations (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2026
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Veit Arlt (veit.arlt@unibas.ch)
Pascal Schmid (pascal.schmid@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content From 26-28 August 2026 the Centre for African Studies at the University of Basel will run the joint convention of the Swiss Society for African Studies and the German Association for African Studies VAD e.V. We expect approximately 500 scholars to participate – most of them on-site. On 25 August 2026 an additional Young Scholars Meeting will be organized by PhD students.
In the context of this conference, we introduce students to one of the key activities in academic work, namely organizing a scholarly meeting. Together we will define tasks and design processes and structures, thereby shaping the event. For the conference delegates, our work will be decisive for a positive experience. As participants in this course, you will take charge of specific tasks in the conference management and will lead dedicated teams of volunteers during the conference days.
In the framework of this course, you will receive an introduction to the general concept of a conference and its functions and you will learn about the essentials of conference management. We look forward to engaging with you in this practical endeavor, and to fostering together a unique experience for all involved.
