78308-01 - Block seminar: How to Study Media, Science, and Technology (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2026
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Ranjodh Singh Dhaliwal (ranjodhsingh.dhaliwal@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This course offers a bidisciplinary introduction to theoretical approaches used to understand media, science, and technology, with a focus on bringing together, in an introductory fashion, two disciplinary frameworks, namely media studies and science and technology studies (STS). These two disciplines have occasionally looked at similar issues and objects in science and technology, both in alignment and in opposition. We will also plug some of these (critical) theoretical understandings of media and technoscience into the longer histories of politics, philosophy, society, culture, arts, language, and literature.
The course shall conclude with a one-day symposium featuring several international experts who work at the intersections of these two disciplines, with an aim towards situating ourselves within the dissonances/resonances between these methods and frameworks today.
