| Content | This lecture introduces the scientific study of child development from conception through childhood and early adolescence. It covers the biological foundations of development, including genetic influences, prenatal development, birth, and physical growth, as well as major domains of psychological development such as cognition, language, communication, emotion, social understanding, and moral development. The course discusses central theoretical perspectives and empirical findings in developmental psychology and introduces the research methods used to study developmental change. Particular emphasis is placed on understanding development as a dynamic process shaped by interactions between biological and environmental factors. |
| Learning objectives | By the end of the course, students are able to: 1. Describe major developmental changes from conception through childhood and early adolescence. 2. Describe the biological foundations of development, including genetic and prenatal influences. 3. Distinguish major theories and concepts of child development. 4. Identify mechanisms that contribute to developmental change and continuity. 5. Describe the development of cognition, language, communication, intelligence, and academic skills. 6. Describe the development of emotion, self-understanding, social cognition, and moral behavior. 7. Apply developmental theories, concepts, research findings, and methods to explain developmental phenomena and individual differences. |

| Comments | Es handelt sich um eine Pflichtvorlesung im Bachelorstudium Psychologie (Erstes Studienjahr, Modul «Propädeutikum», StO24). Die Studierenden müssen den Jahreskurs im HS und FS belegen. Die Kreditpunkte werden jedoch erst nach erfolgreich bestandener Klausur im FS vergeben (§13ff. Studienordnung). Es müssen alle Propädeutischen Klausuren abgelegt worden sein, bevor Kreditpunkte ausserhalb des Propädeutischen Moduls erworben werden können. Ausgenommen von dieser Regelung sind Kreditpunkte im Einführungsmodul und Kreditpunkte im ausserfakultären Wahlbereich (§10.3 Studienordnung). Nicht bestandene Propädeutische Klausuren können einmal wiederholt werden. Studierende, die im ersten Versuch nicht bestanden haben, sind automatisch zur Wiederholungsprüfung angemeldet (…) (§13.6 Studienordnung). Ein zweites Nichtbestehen einer Propädeutischen Klausur führt zum Ausschluss vom Studium der Psychologie an der Universität Basel (§13.8 Studienordnung). |
