79131-01 - Seminar: Fortgeschrittene Longitudinale Strukturgleichungsmodelle in der Psychologie (1 CP)

Semester spring semester 2026
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Smeralda Senn (smeralda.senn@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The workshop is conducted by the external lecturer Dr. Claudia Crayen, Researcher from the Freie Universität Berlin, Department of Education and Psychology, Methods and Evaluation Division.

In this class, we look at advanced structural equation models (SEM), focusing on longitudinal models.
After a conceptual look at change and variability, the first day centers on discrete time approaches within the SEM framework such as change models, growth curve models, multilevel models, and autoregressive models, including the cross-lagged-panel model. On day two, we expand the models to include unobserved heterogeneity in mixture models, and to account for unevenly spaced observations by treating time continuously in Dynamic SEM.
Implementation of the models will be within R and the lavaan and ctsem packages if possible, and the Mplus Demo Version (https://statmodel.com/demo.shtml) if necessary.
Upon completion of the seminar, students should be able to choose the model best suited to their research question, and to develop and interpret such a model.

Comments The workshop will be held as a winter school over two days at a hotel in Thun (19.-20.03.2026, 9-16 Uhr).
The doctoral program will cover the costs for accommodation and travel. For planning purposes, registration by 15 February 2026 is requested.

Maximum number of participants: 15.

Places will be given according to this selection criteria:
1) PhD students from the doctoral program HI-PSY
2) PhD students of other specializations of the Faculty of Psychology
3) PhD students of other faculties of the University of Basel

HI-PSY rules for withdrawal, absence, or partial course attendance:
If you cannot attend a workshop that you have signed up for, please cancel your course registration as soon as possible by sending an e-mail to smeralda.senn@unibas.ch. This will allow other PhD students interested in the course to move up from the waiting list. After the university’s official registration period has ended, cancelled course will be assessed with NE. Course registrations can be cancelled until one week before the workshops begins. In the case of late cancellations, participants will not be considered for course registration in the next three months of the lecture periods and will be removed from the registration list of any course they have signed up during these three upcoming months of the lecture periods.

If an urgent, unforeseeable, or inevitable event before or during the course prevents a participant from attending, a written and substantiated withdrawal request that includes appropriate documentation (e.g. a doctor’s note) must be submitted to smeralda.senn@unibas.ch within two days of the workshop and without being prompted. The program director decides on the approval of the withdrawal request.

ECTS-points are awarded only for 100% course attendance.

Admission requirements The workshop is offered by the doctoral program Health & Interventions (HI-PSY) and counts towards the research method and/or Winter/Summer School (new regulations effective from 2026) curriculum area of the PhD program HI-PSY.

The class is aimed at PhD students of psychology with a solid foundational understanding of regression analysis and latent variable models (confirmatory factor analysis). Basic R skills are required.
