Content The methods of organismal biology are as diverse as the field of organismal biology and its questions. Yet, there are certain fundamental methods and skills that every biology student should learn. This practical course is designed to provide an introduction to some of the most common and interdisciplinary methods used in organismal biology. Participants will gain hands-on experience working with a variety of organisms at different scales, develop basic laboratory, microscopy and field skills, learn to follow and document experimental procedures, as well as visualize and interpret their generated data.
The practical is structured into three thematic blocks, with each block providing an opportunity for the students to address a biological question. Over the course of these three blocks the students work their way from the macroscopic, to the microscopic and ultimately to the molecular world of organismal biology:

1. The macroscopic level of organismal biology - a field study.
2. The microscopic level of organismal biology - measuring through the lens.
3. The molecular level of organismal biology - experiments in the laboratory.

This practical course is conducted as a collaboration among all the biology research groups at the Department of Environmental Sciences (i.e., botany, ecology, and zoology).
Comments This course is intended for students in the BSc Biology in the 3rd semester.

It consists of an introductory event, 6 practical days (each on Thursdays, 10:15-17:00) and a final exam. Attendance is compulsory.
Exact dates, times and groups for the practical days will be defined on ADAM in the last week of August.

Students will need a computer (laptop) for this course. A tablet is not sufficient.

Admission requirements Three requirements must be met for admission to the MOB course:

1) All examinations for the main lectures of the modules Bio 1 and Bio 2 must have been written.
The combined grade average of the Bio 1 and Bio 2 modules must be sufficient.

2) The practical courses «Allgemeine Chemie» (12222) and «Grundlagen der präparativen organischen Chemie» (10571) must have been attended. Participation requirements and course dates can be found in the course directory.

3) You must register for the course via the Online Services no later than 20 August 2026 (https://services.unibas.ch/).

Students who do not achieve the required grade average will be placed on a waiting list and may be considered if places become available. The criteria for admission from the waiting list will be determined if necessary.
Course application Registration:
You must register for the MOB course in unibas online services no later than 20 August 2026 (https://services.unibas.ch/).
