| Content | The goal of this lecture is to provide students with a thorough understanding of molecular epidemiology in infectious diseases. We will discuss the different applications of molecular epidemiology and the various study designs and molecular and epidemiological tools used in these studies. We will review molecular epidemiological applications to study disease transmission, detect antimicrobial resistance, and determine the genetic population structure of pathogens. We will explore various disease systems including viruses, bacteria and eukaryotic parasites causing disease in humans or animals. |
| Learning objectives | To understand the basic concepts and rationale behind molecular epidemiological studies of infectious diseases; to know and understand the molecular and epidemiological techniques used in these studies and when to apply them; to know how to critically review scientific literature. |
