| Content | This lecture treats how smell was manipulated by and represented in material and visual culture of the early modern period. To get at this notoriously ephemeral and poorly theorized early modern experience, we will use modern perfumery concepts as starting points for this exploration. These lectures will thus also necessarily look at how smell is treated and mobilized within modern and contemporary artistic practice. |
| Comments | NB: to enliven lectures and concepts, perfume and perfume ingredients will be circulated in each class. Students should consider whether health reasons prevent them from spending time in heavily scented environments before signing up for this course. |
