79233-01 - Lecture with practical courses: Scientific Writing with AI (1 CP)

Content This course helps doctoral students work on scientific writing tasks with AI-based tools effectively, efficiently, and responsibly. In two interactive workshops, participants learn about the technology, its ethical risks, mitigation strategies for the risks, and publishers’ and scientists’ expectations regarding AI. In hands-on exercises, students practice and reflect on working on their own manuscripts with AI, from literature search to final polishing. The course shares best practices about prompting, setting up custom bots, and choosing or creating the right tools for the writing tasks.
Learning objectives After the completion of this course, participants will be able to:
• Choose the right AI tools to work with on diverse scientific writing tasks
• Recognize the limitations and risks these AI tools pose and mitigate the risks
• Align their workflow with academic expectations
• Search and interpret scientific literature with AI-based tools
• Prompt effectively
• Create custom AI tools

Admission requirements Primarily for PhD students at the Department of Environmental Sciences (Master’s students may join with permission).

Assessment details Attendance and active participation during the course days (16 hours). To get the credit points, you must hand in an assignment that you work on at home (preparation work of 14 hours). Assignment details will be explained during the course. The finished assignment is due no later than two weeks after the course has ended.
