79400-01 - Research seminar: Shakespeare’s "The Tempest" and Its Travels (4 CP)

Semester fall semester 2026
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Ina Habermann (ina.habermann@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content ‘We are such stuff / As dreams are made on, and our little life / Is rounded with a sleep.’ William Shakespeare’s The Tempest has a special place in the Shakespeare canon. One of the late Romances, it has often been read as Shakespeare’s poetic testament, and his farewell to the stage. But with its intriguing island setting and cast of characters, it has also been a key inspiration for postcolonial and feminist rewritings and criticism. In this course, we will study the play as well as its critical and creative afterlife.
Learning objectives Students will hone their skills in close reading and interpretation of drama, fiction and film and embark on independent research. They will also become more familiar with Shakespeare’s work and the related criticism.
