79732-01 - Seminar: Apartheid (3 CP)

Semester fall semester 2026
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Lorena Rizzo (lorena.rizzo@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The seminar introduces students to the spatial, legal, economic, social and political dimensions of apartheid established in mid-20th century South Africa. We will attend to the ways in which apartheid affected the lives of Black South Africans and foreground forms of resistance and resilience against the racial order. We will then move on to retrace some of the trajectories of apartheid as a legal and analytical concept beyond South Africa, including the codification of apartheid as a crime against humanity and the use of apartheid as an interpretative framework to understand the politics of race in Israel/Palestine
Bibliography Readings will include chapters from Saul Dubow, Apartheid, 1948-1994 (Oxford, 2014); A. Clarno, Neoliberal Apartheid. Palestine/Israel and South Africa after 1994 (Chicago, 2017); Christoph Marx, The Anxieties of White Supremacy. Hendrik Verwoerd and the Apartheid Mindset (Berlin/Boston, 2024); Lana Tatour & Ronit Lentin (eds.), Race and the Question of Palestine (Stanford, 2025)
