Semester fall semester 2026
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Olena Palko (olena.palko@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This academic excursion offers students the opportunity to explore Transylvania’s complex history of shifting borders, multiethnic coexistence, and contested identities. Through visits to key cities and
academic institutions in Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu, Brașov, Sighișoara, and Timișoara (TBC), students will engage with the region’s diverse cultural heritage and examine how communities navigated imperial collapse, nation-making, and state-imposed social engineering.
The trip complements in-class discussions during the seminar 77980-01 Living In-Between: Borders, Identities, and Nation-Making in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe by situating scholarly debates within the lived landscapes of Transylvania, highlighting the interplay of belonging, resistance, and memory across empires and nations. Only students who participated in the seminar in FS26 may attend the excursion.
