| Content | While it is hoped that no serious scholar still believes that Sub-Saharan African history begins with European or Arab contact, this is unfortunately not the case with prevailing views of the continent’s legal history. Approaching law and normativities in relation to the economy, politics, religion, and culture, this proseminar conceives the early modern legal field as truly pervasive, with everyone participating to some degree—from kings to the enslaved. We will focus on sources that predate our modern legal constructs, such as colonial and customary law, and explore what we can learn about early modern African normative systems and how this knowledge can inform our historical reconstruction of common lives and local societies. Sources include oral traditions, linguistic evidence, material culture, petitions, and epistolary writings by African authors, as well as European-authored sources such as merchants’ accounts, pragmatic literature (e.g., catechisms, confessor’s manuals), and moral-theology compendia that discuss the legitimacy of the Atlantic slave trade. |
| Admission requirements | Für Studierende des BSF Geschichte im Grundstudium mit abgeschlossenem Einführungskurs Geschichte. Teilnahme an der ersten Sitzung ist obligatorisch. Die Teilnehmer*innenzahl ist auf 25 beschränkt. Bei Überbelegung werden Studierende des BSF Geschichte, die noch kein Proseminar in dem Modul absolviert haben, bevorzugt zugelassen. Im Rahmen des Grundstudiums ist es erforderlich, in jeder Epoche ein Proseminar zu besuchen. In drei der vier Epochen müssen Proseminararbeiten verfasst werden. Diese sind an die besuchten Proseminare gebunden und müssen im Rahmen dieser Veranstaltungen angefertigt werden. Pro Epoche soll nur ein Proseminar besucht werden. Bei Überbelegung werden nur Personen zugelassen, die in der jeweiligen Epoche noch kein Proseminar besucht haben. |
