| Content | (Deutsch vgl. unten) This course offers an overview of the history of psychiatry from the late 19th century to the present. The history ranges from the programmatic debates of the 19th century (‘psychics’ vs. ‘somatics’; asylums vs. clinical psychiatry to the medicalization of psychiatry – particularly following revolutions in neuroscientific understanding and pharmacological interventions into the same. The focus is on more recent approaches to the history of psychiatry: from the history of the patient and perspectives of cultural and media history (on the boom of psychiatric diagnoses) to the history of science and technology in psychiatry. Special attention is paid to patient experiences and how social positionalities can define/modulate individual interactions with institutionalized forms of psychiatry. This course is rooted in history and (cultural) anthropology, but is intentionally designed to be interdisciplinary, and includes readings and concepts from biology, sociology, media studies, science and technology studies (STS). The course is taught mainly in English, with some sections in German. No prior knowledge or experience with biology/medicine/psychology/psychiatry is expected. Dieser Kurs bietet einen Überblick über die Geschichte der Psychiatrie vom späten 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart. Die Geschichte reicht von den programmatischen Debatten des 19. Jahrhunderts („Psychiker“ vs. „Somatiker“; Anstaltspsychiatrie vs. klinische Psychiatrie) bis hin zur Medikalisierung der Psychiatrie – insbesondere im Zuge der neurowissenschaftlichen und psychopharmakologischen Revolutionen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf neueren Ansätzen zur Psychiatriegeschichte: von der Patient:innengeschichte und Perspektiven der Kultur- und Mediengeschichte (etwa zu psychiatrischen «Modediagnosen») bis hin zur Wissenschafts- und Technikgeschichte der Psychiatrie. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt den Erfahrungen der Patient:innen und der Frage, wie soziale Positionalitäten die individuellen Interaktionen mit institutionalisierten Formen der Psychiatrie prägten. Dieser Kurs kombiniert historische und (kultur-)anthropologische Zugänge, ist bewusst interdisziplinär angelegt und umfasst Texte und Konzepte aus der Biologie, Soziologie, den Medienwissenschaften sowie den Wissenschafts- und Technikstudien (STS). Der Kurs wird überwiegend in Englisch, teils in Deutsch unterrichtet. Es werden keine Vorkenntnisse in Biologie, Medizin, Psychologie oder Psychiatrie vorausgesetzt. |
