19520-01 - Lecture: Gene Expression in Eukaryotes (2 CP)

Semester fall semester 2026
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Jeffrey Chao (jeffrey.chao@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Luca Giorgetti (luca.giorgetti@unibas.ch)
Alexander Schmidt (alex.schmidt@unibas.ch)
Content In this lecture, we will be covering gene expression in Eukaryotes beginning with transcription in the nucleus and ending with degradation of proteins in the cytoplasm.

Topics that will be discussed include Regulatory DNA sequences: promoters, enhancers, locus control regions; General transcription machinery; Transcription factors, cell-specific and ubiquitous; Mechanistic aspects of transcription activation; Chromatin, histone modifications, DNA methylation; Genome 3D organization and its impact on gene expression; Gene regulatory networks; Enhancers and Super-enhancers as integrators of gene activity; Transcription factors as master controlers of cellular differentiation; Transcription factors in health and disease; Functional dissection of transcription control by genome-wide screens; Quantitative analysis of transcription control; mRNA stability; translation regulation; RNA localization; protein modification and protein degradation
