| Lecturers | Carlotta Manz (carlotta.manz@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
| Content | This course provides a general introduction to law and legal studies. It first familiarizes students with foundational legal concepts and methods, before focusing on core subjects that students will potentially encounter in subsequent coursework. |
| Learning objectives | By the end of the course, students should be able to: (1) Develop a critical understanding of selected fundamental legal concepts and methods. Students should be able to apply these skills in subsequent law-related courses and in research work (e.g., a master’s thesis involving legal elements). (2) Demonstrate a general understanding of the Swiss legal system, including its main areas of law, as well as of regional and international law. Students are not expected to develop extensive expertise in each area covered, but they should be able to contextualize these different legal fields in relation to one another, identify which body of law is applicable in each situation, and understand the main sources of law in each system. |
| Bibliography | A reading list (mainly composed of legal decisions) will be available on Adam at the beginning of the semester. |
