79341-01 - Seminar: Personal Replication (6 CP)

Semester fall semester 2026
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Christian Tschudin (christian.tschudin@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Peer-to-peer replication is often seen in the context of sharing: Bittorrent for files, Google Docs for collaborative editing, Git for programming in a team. What is overlooked, however, is that replication can be useful for an individual, too. In this seminar we will look at cases where it's a single person that benefits from being able to replicate his or her content. Use cases are: backup in general, contacts, password wallet, photo vault. For all these services there exist commercial and centralized offerings, while we will design and build decentralized solutions that work without these intermediaries: friends and family will offer storage for their mutual personal replication needs.
Learning objectives The goals of this seminar are: a) to understand replication technology (rsync, git, CRDT, bittorrent, IPFS), b) design a personal replication app (e.g. encrypted password wallet), c) build, test and deploy the app either on a smartphone or on laptops.
