| Content | This seminar invites students to explore the dynamic relationship between language and society across time. Language and social life are in constant dialogue, today as in the past. However, to what extent are sociolinguistic phenomena we observe in the modern world recognizable in ancient societies? Are these phenomena unique to contemporary contexts, or do they have deep historical roots? Using modern sociolinguistic realities as a point of departure, the course will examine diachronic patterns and transformations, revealing how past societies negotiated language, identity, and social structures. By tracing these continuities and contrasts, students will gain fresh insights into both historical and contemporary linguistic landscapes, learning to contextualize present-day phenomena within a broader temporal perspective. |
