| Content | This lecture aims to provide students with an overview of the state of the art concerning the mental lexicon. It focuses on the following questions: • What are the contents of the mental lexicon, and how is it structured? • What is the dividing line between the mental lexicon and mental syntax? • How are the contents of the mental lexicon acquired? • Do we have different mental lexicons for different modalities (speech, writing…) and languages? • What is the relationship between the mental lexicon and other domains of cognition (perception, motor action, abstract reasoning)? These and related questions will be explored from different theoretical perspectives, drawing on recent empirical evidence from psycho- and neurolinguistics. |
| Learning objectives | In this lecture, students will gain an overview of current debates around the mental lexicon. They will also be introduced to empirical research methods used in neuro- and psycholinguistics. They will further learn how these methods can be used to adjudicate between competing models of the mental lexicon. |
