18901-01 - Seminar: From Kate and Beatrice to Rosalind and Viola: Shakespeare's Leading Ladies in "The Taming of the Shrew", "Much Ado About Nothing", "As You Like It", "Twelfth Night" (3 CP)

Semester fall semester 2007
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Therese Steffen (therese.steffen@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content An extended journey into the staged lives of four female protagonists, their relations and dramatic functions in four comedies, will lead us from Heinrich Heine’s Shakespeares Mädchen und Frauen (the starting point of our discussion) to a more current assessment of women’s engendered roles in their respective comic settings. "The Taming of the Shrew", "Much Ado About Nothing", "As You Like It", and "Twelfth Night" feature particularly resourceful heroines in their pursuit of happiness and subsequent marriage. Thus, the multifarious role playing of Kate, the Shrew, Beatrice, the Wit, Rosalind, the Educator, and Viola, the androgynous Go-Between will be the focus of our scholarly attention.
