Course frequency | Once only |
Lecturers | Ina Habermann (INA.HABERMANN@UNIBAS.CH, Assessor) |
Content | Since the early days of film, Shakespeares drama has been a favourite subject for the new medium. Although some believe Shakespeare to be box office poison, directors continue to be inspired by the Bard, and the critical analysis of Shakespeare on Screen is a lively and expanding academic field. In this course, we will read selected plays, engage with a variety of film versions and also look at some related criticism. See you in fair Verona |
Learning objectives | Students will become more familiar with Shakespeares drama and its cultural contexts and discuss examples of various genres (tragedy, history, comedy). At the same time, they will learn about film adaptation and get a historical overview of the ways in which Shakespeares plays have been turned into film. |
Bibliography | To buy: William Shakespeare, "Romeo and Juliet", "Richard III", "Macbeth", "Much Ado About Nothing" (Arden Editions). A mastercopy folder with criticism will be availabe. |
Comments | Screenings of the films will take place on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. at the department in the Grosse Hörsaal. If you absolutely cannot make it to the screenings for a very good reason, you must watch the films independently. |
Admission requirements | For students who have successfully completed their 1st year courses in Literature and Culture Studies. |
Course application | Places in a particular one of the three parallel courses are assigned on a first-come-first-served basis. Sign up by putting your name on one of the lists on the noticeboard next to the photocopier (from June 20, noon). |
