Content | The seminar will address the evaluation of physico-chemical and pharmacological or toxicological properties of drugs and pharmaceutical excipients with a series of case-based studies. To prepare for the seminar, students will receive selected literature for each case study. In the seminar, the lecturer will give a brief introduction of the topic and define the problem to be adressed. In small groups, the participants will develop solutions which then will be presented, discussed and compared with practical solutions found in pharmaceutical drug development and formulation programmes for this particular problem. |
Learning objectives | The participants know and understand the parameters which are important for the pharmaceutical and pharmacological/toxicological profiling of a compound. They are able to evaluate the suitability of a molecule as drug substance, and to delineate options for specific modifications of a compound in view of an optimization of its properties as a drug. The participants are capable of assessing the physico-chemical properties of pharmaceutical excipients. From this knowledge, they can derive approaches for the development of pharmaceutical formulations with defined release or suited for drug targeting. |
Bibliography | Literature related to the topic of the seminar will be handed out in advance by the lecturers. As general reference, the following book can be consulted: Molecular Drug Properties. Measurement and Prediction. R. Mannhold, H. Kubinyi, G. Folkers, Wiley-VCH 2007 |
