Semester | spring semester 2008 |
Course frequency | Once only |
Lecturers | Regula Hohl Trillini (r.hohl@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | Reading Milton's 1667 epic "Paradise Lost" and critical literature. |
Learning objectives | In general: 1. To practice and expand the range of skills acquired in the Introduction, in the reading of a more challenging literary work and a more intense involvement with critical texts. 2. To enable students to write their first (shorter) seminar paper at the end of the summer term In particular: 1. To appreciate and enjoy Paradise Lost as a uniquely rich, allusive and formally intricate work of art which, moreover, raises still-relevant questions. 2. To gain an understanding of the specific literary, philosophical and religious contexts in which Milton's epic was produced. 3. To gain some understanding of critical approaches that have been made. |
Bibliography | John Milton, Paradise Lost. Norton Critical Edition (ordered at "Labyrinth" bookshop). Critical texts will be made available as master copies in the course folder. |
Comments | "Paradise Lost" takes some getting used to but it repays re-reading, so if you can, read ahead beyond Book II (even if you feel far from understanding everything!). |
Admission requirements | Successful attendance of the first semester of a Second-Year Course in literature. In preparation, read AT LEAST books 1 and 2 of "Paradise Lost" before the beginning of the semester. |
Course application | Places are assigned on a first-come-first-served basis: enrol by email to the teacher r.hohl(at)unibas.ch. The first 22 students to enrol are guaranteed a place in the second-year course of their choice; others are put on a waiting list and may have to attend one of the other two courses on offer. |
