Content This lecture course offers a survey of major African-American writing in the context of cultural history as it familiarizes students with the enduring complexities of racial, social, and gender issues. Along the way into freedom, literacy, and brilliant literary accomplishment we will focus on the following authors and historical periods: The Vernacular Tradition; The Literature of Slavery and Freedom: 1746-1865; Literature of the Reconstruction to the New Negro Renaissance: 1865-1919; Harlem Renaissance: 1919-1940; Realism, Naturalism, Modernism: 1940-1960; The Black Arts Movement: 1960-1970; Literature since 1970. Among the writers we will focus on are Phillis Wheatley, Olaudah Equiano, Mary Prince, Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, Alain Locke, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Gwendolyn Brooks, Amiri Baraka, Alice Walker, Audre Lorde, John Edgar Wideman, Rita Dove and Toni Morrison.
