Semester | spring semester 2008 |
Course frequency | Irregular |
Lecturers | Ina Habermann (ina.habermann@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | In this course we will explore the many facets of Elizabethan literature and culture with a view to developing a picture of the period which can be presented in an instructive and entertaining manner to a larger audience (students, interested public). Learning about this crucial phase of Englands cultural history, the reign of the Virgin Queen, will be focused by the challenge of presenting it to others in a meaningful and appealing way. |
Learning objectives | Students will learn about a crucial period of English cultural history and also develop their skills in organizing a cultural event, much as if they were working for an Arts Council or a similar cultural institution. The course aims to help students acquire key qualifications necessary for cultural management a potential field of activity for graduates in English. |
Bibliography | To buy and read in advance: Ulrich Suerbaum, "Das elisabethanische Zeitalter" (Stuttgart: Reclam 1989). Further reading: - "The Norton Anthology of English Literature", Vol. I; - "The Cambridge Companion to English Literature 1500-1600", ed. Arthur F. Kinney, CUP 2000; - Kate Aughterson (ed.), "The English Renaissance. An Anthology of Sources and Documents", London: Routledge 1998; - Roy Strong, "The Cult of Elizabeth" [1977], London: Pimlico 1999. |
Comments | Students are invited to take part in this experiment and encouraged to voice their ideas and suggestions at all times. If you do not like to perform in front of an audience, dont worry because there will be ample opportunity to work in the background. This could be a great deal of fun! |
