19942-01 - Seminar: The Image of the White in Southern Africa (Gastlehrauftrag der Carl Schlettwein-Stiftung) (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2008
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Therese Steffen (therese.steffen@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content The purpose of this seminar is to study, analyze and critique theories concerning the discursive construction of 'subjectivities' and forms of representation of cultures. It will explore the relationship between power and speech through major literary sources as they relate to 'ethnicity', race, and social class. Focus will be on the representation and analysis of the images of Africans, and Africans creating white images. Thus, this seminar also explores the creation of reciprocal stereotypes, their cultural function and occasional deconstruction.
