20916-01 - Practical course: Cultural Theory (3 CP)

Semester fall semester 2008
Course frequency Irregular
Lecturers Ina Habermann (ina.habermann@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content After a short introduction to classic notions of culture, we will study and discuss a variety of theoretical approaches to culture. Our own approach in the course will be thematic rather than chronological, addressing such notions as ‘memory’, ‘the sign’ or ‘the body’. We will look at examples of cultural theory ‘at work’ and explore the practical dimension of cultural theory.
Learning objectives Students will gain an overview over theoretical approaches to culture and the possibilities of practical application.
Bibliography Material will be available in a mastercopy folder towards the beginning of term. For preliminary reading you may consult Aleida Assmann, "Einführung in die Kulturwissenschaft" (Berlin: Erich Schmidt 2006) – in German, but very helpful.
