Content | Between 2002-2005 five contemporary authors published novels in which the master Henry James (1843-1916) featured as a major figure in the new text or as part of the plot: Emma Tennants "Felony" (2002), Colm Tóibíns "The Master" (2004), David Lodges "Author, Author" (2004), Alan Hollinghursts "The Line of Beauty" (2004), and Michiel Heyns "The Typewriters Tale" (2005) are indeed intriguing examples of intertextuality. We will examine these multifarious relations between the original as well as the rewritings. As we get acquainted with the scripts and prescripts we will further discuss current concepts of authorship as to explain the sudden interest in Jamess writing. |
