Semester | spring semester 2009 |
Course frequency | Irregular |
Lecturers | Regula Hohl Trillini (r.hohl@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | John Milton campaigned for divorce, freedom of the press and the execution of King Charles I. He made daring additions to the Bible (sex in Paradise and a glamorous Satan), but his God tolerates no discussions over Good and Evil, and his Eve is beautiful, blonde and guilty. So was he a hopeless misogynist or an admirable Republican, a creepy fundamentalist or a profound analyst of the human condition? Well meet some opinions from the continuing critical debate and eventually join in. What remains undisputed and rewarding is the power of Miltons poetry, which made Virginia Woolf say: Even Shakespeare after this would seem a little troubled, hot, personal & imperfect. |
Learning objectives | Students deepen and expand their skills and prepare to write their first (shorter) seminar paper at the end of the summer term. They will become familiar with John Miltons epic "Paradise Lost", with its literary, historical and religious contexts and with significant critical approaches. |
Bibliography | John Milton, "Paradise Lost". Norton Critical Edition (ordered at 'Labyrinth' bookshop). Critical texts will be made available on the course server. |
Comments | "Paradise Lost" takes some getting used to, but it repays re-reading, so if you can, read ahead beyond Book II, even if you feel far from understanding everything! |
Admission requirements | Successful attendance of the first semester of a Second-Year Course. In preparation, read AT LEAST books I and II of "Paradise Lost" before the beginning of the semester. |
Course application | Places are assigned on a first-come-first-served basis: enrol by email to alex.van-lierde@unibas.ch, indicating your first and second choices. The first 18 students to enrol are guaranteed a place in the second-year course of their first choice; others may be shifted to one of the other two courses on offer in the interest of evening out student numbers. |
