| Content | This lecture course offers a survey on African American Writing from the beginning (Wheatley, Equiano) through the 19th century (Douglass, slave narratives, Washington, Du Bois), to the Harlem Renaissance (Locke, Toomer, Hughes, Larsen et al.). Via the Depresssion years (Hurston, Wright) we move into the 1950s (Ellison, Baldwin, Hansberry) and focus on the outburst of talent after the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s with, among others, Walker, Morrison, Dove, Wilson, Shange, Parks, Smith. The focus will be on the contents and discontents of an the emergening African American Literature/Culture within the U.S.A. |
