Content | English is not only spoken in Britain, the United States, Canada, New Zealand or Australia. Classifying the 'Englishes' of the world, Kachru (1992) speaks of three 'circles': the 'Inner Circle', comprising the varieties just mentioned, the 'Outer Circle' (Bangladesh, Ghana, India, ...) and the 'Expanding Circle' (China, Egypt, Indonesia, ...). In this seminar, we will look at the types of English that exist, at questions of standard language ideology, the internationalization of English, the role of English in Asia and Europe and the future of World Englishes. |
Learning objectives | Introduction to other varieties of English than the core national ones; raising of awareness for English as an International language; introduction to key topics in World Englishes. |
