Content Emotional events are better remembered than neutral ones. We have recently shown that a genetic variation of an adrenergic receptor (a2B-adrenoceptor) affects emotional memory in healthy humans and traumatic memory in war victims. In addition, it is known that sleep plays an important role in the consolidation of neutral and emotional memories. In the research project we intend to investigate neural correlates of genetic differences in emotional memory encoding and consolidation (during sleep) using electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The results will provide important clues in identifying possible risk factors and novel treatment options in the context of post-traumatic stress disorder. We are looking for motivated master students who are interested in working with EEG and fMRI methodology, learning how to analyze and interpret the data and linking these results to genetic differences in affective processing, emotional memory formation and sleep-dependent memory consolidation.
