Lecturers | Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor) |
Content | In this course we will focus on language usage in professional practices in the area of counselling, advising and information-giving. We will look at different methodological approaches to the study of such Communities of Practice and will study both face-to-face and written material (for example, doctor-patient interaction, advice columns, etc.). We will also investigate how the ideologies underlying the counselling and advising practices influence language usage and cross-fertilize the different practices and text types. Students are expected to participate actively in workshops and to give presentations on assigned readings and projects. |
Learning objectives | At the end of this course, students should be able to (1) know and apply the key terminology of the field of discourse analysis, (2) acquire knowledge about the speech activities of advising, counselling and information-giving, (3) read the assigned texts critically, and judge the introduced studies with respect to the methods employed. |
