26068-01 - Lecture: Fifth International Symposium on Politeness (2 CP)

Content This three-day conference (30/6 to 2/7/2010) allows students of linguistics to participate in an international conference on politeness. They will be exposed to state-of-the art research in the fields of politeness, impoliteness, relational work and computer-mediated communication studies. Thematically, this conference links to the lecture on relational work in spring term 2010 and to the lecture on CMC in autumn term 2008. More information can be gained on www.sympol.unibas.ch.
Learning objectives This conference allows students of linguistics to participate in an international conference on politeness and to experience academic work in Basel. The conference allows students to further their knowledge in the fields of discourse analysis.
Bibliography Key texts will be made available on the presence shelf in the English department. They should be read as preparation for the conference.
