| Content | This seminar is geared primarily at BA students who have completed their 2nd year (including the paper), but Liz and MA students are welcome, too. We will explore some of Shakespeares most fascinating comedies, combining close readings of the texts with discussions of cultural contexts and discourses as well as performance and criticism. "Jack shall have Jill, Nought shall go ill"! |
| Learning objectives | Students will learn about one of the most important authors of English and world literature in a context of early modern culture and about comedy as a literary genre. They will also develop their skills in literary criticism and presentation. |
| Bibliography | Texts (to be purchased): - William Shakespeare, "The Taming of the Shrew" - W. S., "A Midsummer Nights Dream" - W. S., "The Merchant of Venice" - W.S., "Much Ado About Nothing" - W. S., "Twelfth Night" Please purchase proper and recent English editions of the plays, for example Arden, Oxford or the Norton Shakespeare. Other material will be available as a mastercopy and on the EVA-Server. |
