26757-01 - Lecture: English in the Media / Media English (CUSO doctoral programme) (0 CP)

Semester fall semester 2010
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Miriam Locher (miriam.locher@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This two day PhD course (11-13 November 2010) is organized by Didier Maillat (University of Fribourg) and Miriam Locher (University of Basel) for PhD students in English Language and Literature. It is financed by the CUSO Doctoral Programme in English Language and Literature. This module on English in the media will focus on three specific aspects of on-going research and linguistic debates on the role, function, and use of the English language in mass media.

1) We will question the role of the media in the development of English in an increasingly global context. We will address issues such as the role of the media on language change. Keynote and main discussant: Prof. J. Chambers (University of Toronto)

2) A second line of enquiry will investigate the type of media-induced effects which influence human communication. A special emphasis will be put on the new communicative – and specifically interpretative – conditions, which bear on English, brought about by the development of information technologies. Keynote and main discussant: Prof. Shyam Sundar (University of Pennsylvania)

3) Finally, a more general line of investigation will consider how new media have led to new language uses. For instance, new media have led to new strategies in identity construction by redefining the contextual (pragmatic) conditions of human communication. We will also look at how the new technical and social factors brought by e.g. CMC, shape language usage. Keynote and main discussant: Prof. J. Androutsopoulos (University of Hamburg)
Learning objectives The students should acquire knowledge on English in the Media from three different perspectives, by doing preparatory reading and engaging with the experts in workshops.
