31952-01 - Lecture: Microeconometrics: Panel Data (3 CP)

Semester spring semester 2026
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Kurt Schmidheiny (kurt.schmidheiny@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Outline:
1. Basic Panel Data Models: Fixed and random effects, cluster-robust standard errors, testing RE vs. FE effects under heteroskedasticity, time trends, cohort vs. time effects, bootstrap methods for small numbers of clusters
2. Event Studies with Two-way Fixed Effects Estimation (TWFE): basic event study design, event study design with staggered treatment, binning and identification of dynamic treatment effects, distributed-lag models, multiple treatments, varying treatment intensity
3. ‘New’ Difference-in-differences Estimation (DiD): TWFE and DiD, identification of average treatment effects on the treated (ATT) with DiD, non-identification of ATT with TWFE and staggered treatment, alternative estimators of ATT with staggered treatment
Learning objectives This course discusses advanced tools for the econometric analysis of cross-section and panel data. Each of the tools will be implemented using standard statistical software (R and Stata) and real world data. Students will learn how to choose the adequate statistical method, discuss its identifying assumptions, correctly interpret its results and to translate them into economically meaningful answers.
