77475-01 - Seminar: Digital and Computational Pathology (1 CP)

Semester fall semester 2025
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Maxime Lafarge (maxime.lafarge@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This journal club is open to students with a strong interest in the fields of Digital Pathology and Computational Pathology.
This seminar is an opportunity for participants to learn about recent research results and state-of-the-art methodologies, to develop their reviewing skills and to get input from participating experienced researchers.

At every session (7 sessions per semester), we will focus on a recent publication that will be selected in advance, and all the participants will have to study it and prepare it in advance so as to engage in a fruitful discussion.
The range of potential topics covers: novel technical developments in digital/computational pathology (microscopy, tissue image analysis, machine learning) and their medical applications (diagnostic pathology).
(a list of all the previous publications studied over the past sessions of the journal club is available in the links)

Biomedical engineers and pathologists from the Computational and Translational Pathology Lab at the University of Basel and University Hospital Basel will be invited to contribute to the discussion and share their view on the studied publications and answer questions from the participants.
Once per semester, every student will have to prepare and give a short 10-minute presentation to introduce the background and related work of the selected publication at a given session.
Learning objectives Participants will 1) learn about recent research results and state-of-the-art methodologies in digital and computational pathology, 2) will be given the opportunity to develop their reviewing and presentation skills by interacting with participating experienced researchers.
Comments maximum of 12 participants (priority for PhD students, priority for students of the department of Biomedical Engineering (DBE), first come first served)
