Content | This course will explore the evolution of the nationalities and minority policies in the Soviet Union in the 1920s-1930s. It will provide an account for the rationale for the preferential Bolshevik attitude towards different national and ethnic groups within the Union borders and investigate the differences in implementing the all-Soviet policies in the Soviet republics during the 1920s. The course is designed to highlight the contradictory nature of the Soviet nationalities and minority policies in the interwar period and suggest the reasons for subsequent effective assimilation and sovietisation of the Soviet republics and its peoples. The study of the Soviet nationalities policy will provide for understanding the origins of various contemporary conflicts in the area. |
