48515-01 - Proseminar: An Introduction to Metaphysics 3 CP

Semester fall semester 2017
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Melanie Sarzano (melanie.sarzano@unibas.ch)
Marie van Loon (marie.vanloon@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In this Proseminar we offer an overview of the main problems, paradoxes and issues found in analytic metaphysics. Analytic metaphysics asks questions about what exists, the nature of things, and how these things are linked to one another. We will discuss these general issues as well as particular ones.
From personal identity, object identity (how do objects change and persist through time?), theories of time (does time exist?), paradoxes of time travel, theories of causation to meta-ontology (what does it mean for a thing to exist?), the aim of this course is to offer an introductory dive into the topic.
Our approach will be problem-based. We will read texts and articles in order to help us get a firm grasp on these problems.

[This Proseminar will take place in English.]
