38019-01 - Proseminar: Experimental Nano- and Quantumphysics 4 CP

Semester fall semester 2018
Course frequency Every fall sem.
Lecturers Philipp Treutlein (philipp.treutlein@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Richard Warburton (richard.warburton@unibas.ch)
Content This proseminar aims at exposing students to modern research topics in the field of experimental nano- and quantum physics, which is one of the cornerstones in research at the Basel physics department. Concrete learning objectives include:

-To expand knowledge of quantum and nanophysics
-To learn why this area of physics is interesting, special and useful
-To get acquainted with current topics in research in Basel and beyond
-To learn how to read and understand research papers
-To learn how to present scientific results in a concise and comprehensive way

Topics which were covered in recent years include the following fields:
Quantum optics / Nanomechanics and “phononics” / Surface science / Ultracold atoms / Fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics / Quantum technologies (computing / communication / sensing / …) / Quantum transport of electrons
Learning objectives Understanding and presenting modern research topics in experimental nano- and quantum physics.
Bibliography Current publications to be proposed in proseminar.
