64190-01 - Doctoral course: Soziokritische Literaturtheorien 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2022
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Harm Den Boer (harm.denboer@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content Does literature reflect -or does it need to deal with- issues, conflicts or tensions in society? If so, how is the relation between literature and politics conceived in marxist and other sociocritical theories (think of Gender Theory, Postcolonial Criticism) from the 19th century onwards? In this Kolloquium we will assess selected theoretical texts, think of Goldmann or Jameson, that address the relation between literature and society. At the same time, we use the concepts of sociocritical theory to discuss each participant's ongoing research. A selection of texts will be available at the start of the Kolloquium.
Learning objectives 1) To learn about sociocritical literary theory from Marx onwards and, more importantly
2) To critically reflect on how to relate literary expression to social issues, conflicts, tensions in one's own research
Bibliography To be communicated at the starf of the course
