Content | With the ubiquity of and reliance on digital technologies in our society today, we know that digitalization is having effects on literacy and reading habits. There are researchers who argue that digitalization, and especially the pervasiveness of social media and smartphones in our daily lives, is having detrimental effects on our cognitive abilities (e.g., Carr, 2010; Greenfield, 2009; Sherman, Michikyan, & Greenfield, 2013; Wolf, 2007). However, in this course we are going to focus on the positive potentials of social networking for increasing reading pleasure and motivation (e.g., Howard, 2008; Merga, 2015; Pitcher et al., 2007), as well as social cohesion and community building. 05.10.23: Introduction (Shared Reading in the Age of Digitalization) 12.10.23: Online reader reviews and manual annotation as a research method for studying them 19.10.23: (ONLINE) Introduction to Digital Social Reading (Federico Pianzola) 26.10.23: (ONLINE) Scraping data from social networking sites (Simone Rebora & Massimo Lusetti) 02.11.23: (ONLINE) Wreading and FanFiction (Maria Kraxenberger) 09.11.23: Digital Ethnography and Participatory Research Workshop (Margrit Schreier, Danielle Fuller & DeNel Rehberg-Sedo) 16.11.23: Discourse Analysis of Online Communication about reading 23.11.23: (ONLINE) BookTok and BookTube (Sonali Kulkarni) 30.11.23: (ONLINE) Taking empirical research on Digital Social Reading to a larger scale with machine learning (Simone Rebora & Massimo Lusetti) 07.12.23: The impact of Digital Social Reading on literacy, reading habits and well-being (with Cristina Loi) 14.12.23: Immersion in Digital and Interactive fiction (Cristina Loi) 21.12.23: (ONLINE) Network Analysis using Digital Social Reading data (Anastasia Glawion & Tina Ternes) |

Assessment details | The students will have to read up on papers set by the guest speakers and come up with questions in preparation for the sessions with the guest speakers. Some of these sessions will involve hands-on work rather than a discussion, but this will be made clear in the final syllabus. As a final assessment, students will have to write a blogpost about a topic discussed in the course and we will make an online wikipage on digital social reading together. |
