11073-01 - Practical course: Intensive Composition 3 CP

Semester spring semester 2011
Course frequency Every spring sem.
Lecturers Andrew Shields (andrew.shields@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content In order to work on English-language composition and style and improve essay writing skills in an intensive setting, the students will each write and discuss four short essays. All essays will be discussed by all participants.
The texts for the course will be "dramatic monologues," so the definition of that genre will be discussed, and some secondary literature on the genre and on the works (where available) will be read and discussed as well.
Learning objectives Further development of academic-writing skills in English.
Bibliography Four dramatic monologues will provide the basis of the four essays the students write: Robert Browning, "My Last Duchess"; Richard Wilbur, "The Mind Reader"; Glyn Maxwell, "An August Monday"; Edgar Allan Poe, "The Cask of Amontillado".
Students wishing to read the texts before the beginning of the semester should send an email to the instructor to receive a text booklet for the course.
