27428-01 - Lecture: Concepts of Space and Time in Modernist Fiction 2 CP

Semester spring semester 2011
Course frequency Once only
Lecturers Therese Steffen (therese.steffen@unibas.ch, Assessor)
Content This lecture course seeks to introduce and discuss concepts of space/place and time in a selection of Anglo-American modernist texts roughly between 1900 and 1935. A particular focus will be on the "annus mirabilis" of 1922, i.e., on Virginia Woolf's JACOB'S ROOM, T.S. Eliot's THE WASTE LAND, James Joyces's ULYSSES. Starting out with Gertrude Stein's THREE LIVES and Dorothy Richardson's PILGRIMAGE (Part 1), Ezra Pound's and W.C. Williams' poetry to Ernest Hemingway's and William Faulkner's experimental prose, including E.M. Forster's PASSAGE TO INDIA and S. Eisenstein's films, students will be familiarized not only with the relevant primary sources but with a range of underlying theoretical concepts on space/place and time.
